The Commemoration Meeting of the 50th Anniversary of the Invention of Optical Fibre had its grand opening in Beijing on May 9, where well-known academicians, experts and scholars, and industrial pioneers gathered to commemorate such a great invention that had made far-reaching impacts on the world, looking to the future development of the latest technology trends and new industrial growth point. Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company (stock code: 6869.HK, hereinafter referred to as YOFC) was invited to attend to Commemoration Meeting and also presented in the Technology/Product Exhibition to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Invention of Optical Fibre held in the same period, attracting many renowned experts and visitors to make a visit.

Wu Hequan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering pointed out in his address that Dielectric Fibre Surface Waveguide for Optical Frequencies was first presented by Charles K. Kao in 1966. This study first theorized and proposed to use silica glass optical fibre (hereinafter referred to as optical fibre) in optical communication, marking the birth of an epoch-making mode of communication, with great and profound significance to the information society.

Zhao Zisen, academician of Wuhan Research Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, then introduced the history of optical fibre communication in a humorous and witty way. As early as in 1970s, China had carried out certain technical researches on optical fibre, however, because there were constraints of social environment, optical fibre communication had not been applied in the global, plus the country was in the period of "Culture Revolution" that isolated China with the outside world, it was impossible for us to draw lessons from foreign technologies and further hindered the development of optical fibre technology in China. Under such circumstance, academician Zhao and his colleagues still committed themselves to the cause of optical fibre both of China and the world, with all goals achieved eventually. He pointed out that the emergency of optical fibre brought a technology revolution, and also introduced in details the contributions of YOFC to China's optical fibre industry.

During the three-day Commemoration Meeting, "Preparation for 400G--Summit Forum of New Optical Fibre and Cable Technology Innovation and Industrial Development" is scheduled to be held on May 10, where Wang Ruichun, the General Manager of YOFC Research and Development Center, will make a keynote speech titled Optical Fibre with Ultra-low Loss and Large Effective Areas, and conducted discussions on hot topics, such as how to make preparations for the application of 400G, Tbit/s and other ultra-high speed and ultra-long distance application with the backbone network in future by the opportunity of renewal and replacement of backbone optical fibre network.
