From November 12 to 15, 2013, at Beijing Conference Center, the State Key Laboratory of Information Photonics and Optical Communications (IPOC) of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) and the State Key Laboratory of Fibre and Cable Manufacture Technologies of Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Company Ltd. (YOFC) successfully co-hosted one of the world's three largest optical communication conferences--2013 Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP'2013) & International Conference on Information Photonics and Optical Communications (IPOC'2013).

At the opening ceremony, as chairman of ACP/IPOC'2013 Technical Program Committee, Dr. Luo Jie, CTO of YOFC and director of the State Key Laboratory of Fibre and Cable Manufacture Technologies, was invited to speak at the opening ceremony, outlining conference organization and participation.

Organized by five major optoelectronic industry societies in the world--Optical Society of America (OSA), Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), IEEE Photonics Society, Chinese Optical Society (COS) and China Institute of Communications (CIC), ACP is one of the world's three major optical communication conferences as well as an international optical communication conference with the largest scale, greatest number of participants and widest influence in Asia-Pacific. Extending from the traditional field of optical communication, ACP is a high-quality and high-level exposition and international conference combining science and commerce.

ACP 2013 was the largest-ever edition of ACP in recent five years. Zhores Ivanovich Alferov, academician of the Russian Academy of Science and Nobel laureate in physics and Zhou Bingkun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) served as co-chairmen at the invitation. Cao Jianlin, vice minister of science and technology; CAS Academician Zhou Bingkun and Wang Qiming; Academician & Vice President Wu Hequan and Academician Chen Lianghui of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Zhang Jiping, vice chairman of CIC; Pan Qing, director of the Department of Information Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; Prof. Donna, president of OSA; Eugene, CEO of SPIE and Prof. David Plant, vice president of IEEE Photonics Society attended the opening ceremony and relevant activities; the conference received 964 papers and had 804 registered participants (including over 230 foreign participants); 9 special presentations were made at the conference, 137 special presentations and 292 oral paper prsentations were made at 6 sessions, 48 presentations were made at 5 workshops, 34 speeches were made at 3 industrial forums and 252 papers were posted. Scholars and business people from 20 countries and regions exchanged ideas on research focuses, frontier academic subjects and industrial outlook of the optical communication and optoelectronic field.

During the conference, the State Key Laboratory of Fibre and Cable Manufacture Technologies of YOFC delivered a workshop on new fibre technologies and applications, inviting 10 world-famous experts and scholars from the USA, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Korea and China for presentations. The workshop was organized and hosted by Dr. Xiong Liangming, deputy director of the laboratory, co-organized and co-hosted by Perry Shum, academic member of the laboratory and professor of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Tang Ming, professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Director Dr. Luo Jie and Deputy Director Dr. Tong Weijun of the laboratory attended the workshop.

The State Key Laboratory of Fibre and Cable Manufacture Technologies of YOFC made or posted four oral paper presentations at the conference, made a special presentation at an industrial forum and contributed three co-published papers, covering innovative research fields like large-effective-area fibre, anti-bending fibre, new special fibre, multi-core few-mode fibre and fibre sensing application.

At the organizer's invitation, YOFC participated in the full product exhibition, exhibiting perform, fibre, cable (especially air-blowing micro cable solutions), special fibre, consumer electronics (AOC cable) and integrated wiring products. During the exhibition, peers and scholars from world-famous enterprises or institutions of higher education like Corning, OFS, Bell Laboratory, Huawei, University of Southampton, University of Melbourne, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology visited YOCF booth. They were interested in YOFC's exhibits, especially special fibre, AOC cable, perform technology, air-blowing micro cable, etc. Many scholars and visitors said they has known for the first time that YOFC is a fibre and cable manufacturer, a domestic leading enterprise and one of the world top three fibre and cable manufacturers, hoping that YOFC will participate in more exhibitions in countries like the USA and Australia to enhance its international popularity.

The success of the international academic event is an important practice of all-round cooperation between the State Key Laboratory of Fibre and Cable Manufacture Technologies (YOFC) and the State Key Laboratory of Information Photonics and Optical Communications (BUPT) after they forged an all-round partnership on June 29, 2012. The success of the conference has demonstrated the ability and strength of YOFC and its national key laboratory in an all-round manner from conference organization and collaboration, grand opening ceremony, international academic workshops, innovation achievement release and presentation, and product exhibition, and will play a significant role in further enhancing YOFC's international influence.
